Acid waters, for example lakes, reservoirs, streams, rivers and ground waters, are treated to increase pH by introducing a controlled solubility alkali glass into the acid waters whereupon the glass dissolves slowly to form a base. The base so formed reacts with the excess of hydrogen ions present in the said acid waters thereby increasing the pH of the said waters. Controlled solubility alkali glass may be used to treat a ground area to increase the pH of acidified water held therein by applying such a glass to the catchment area whereupon the glass dissolves slowly to form a base which reacts with the excess of hydrogen ions present in the acidified water. |
