PURPOSE:To enhance an optical confinement effect due to a crystal thin film of good quality by providing a semiconductor optical waveguide with different refractive indexes of two clad layers holding waveguide layers between them and at the same time, with cadmium included by the constituent element of one clad layer. CONSTITUTION:Waveguide layers 42 to 44 and clad layers 41 and 45 holding the layers 42 to 44 between them are formed using a II-VI compound semiconductor, which is formed of a group II element and a group VI element. A semiconductor optical waveguide with different refractive indexes of these layers 41 and 45 from each other and, at the same time, with cadmium contained in either of the layer 41 and the layer 45, is provided. Thereby, as light, which is confined in the layers 42 to 33, in biased to the side of the layer 41 in the layers 42 to 44, the layer 43 having a high refractive index, that is, a light density in the layer 43 is reduced and the deterioration of a crystal thin film can be suppressed. Accordingly, a difference between the refractive indexes of the layers 42 to 44 can be increased and an optical confinement efficiency can be increased. |
