The invention relates to devices and methods for transmitting traffic information from a traffic information control centre (20) to at least one terminal (24) in a highly efficient manner whereby said information relates to a road traffic network. A digital card of the road traffic network is provided as data in the traffic information control centre and in the terminal. Sections of roads or lanes or groups of lanes are represented as segments in said digital card. Transmitted traffic information ("1, 3, 0, end") represents at least the status ( 0 ; congestion ) of and the identity of at least one segment (1 to 12) of the road traffic network. Traffic information (21) to be transmitted from the control centre (20) is compiled (22) therein in such a way that traffic information (average speed 0 ) to be transmitted is combined in the traffic information packet ("1, 3, 0, end") to form a chain, whereby said traffic information relates to the status of the road traffic network segments and to road traffic network segments (1-2-3) which are arranged in a consecutive manner with regard to the numbering thereof.
