A system and method for controlling usage of a payment card by a cardholde r using a cardholder telephony device is provided. The cardholder registers th e payment card and the cardholder telephony device and defines cardholder default limits for the card. During subsequent usage of the card, an authorization computing device connected to the cardholder telephony device by a network verifies that the default limits for the card are not exceeded. If the default limits are exceeded, then a cardholder authorization for the usage o f the card must be provided by the cardholder form the cardholder telephony device . The cardholder may also pre-authorize usage of the card in excess of the default limits.
