PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve suitable engine control by taking into account the time necessary for switching lift characteristics of a valve in a variable valve gear for an internal combustion engine capable of switching the lift characteristics of the valve. SOLUTION: A valve stop mechanism 70 capable of switching between valve operation and valve stop, and a one valve switching mechanism 50 capable of switching between both valve variable control and one valve variable control are provided for each of a plurality of cylinders as mechanisms switching the lift characteristics of the valve. Time necessary for switching lift characteristics in the plurality of cylinders (Ton, Toff) is calculated based on engine speed NE. At switch of the lift characteristics of the valve, execution timing of engine control such as fuel injection is determined based on the time necessary for switching. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
