A water source heat pump, comprising: a compressor; a condenser being fluidly coupled to said compressor by refrigerant tubing; an output conduit coupled to said condenser and being couplable to a distal location; a modulating motor-controlled valve interposed said output conduit, said modulating motor-controlled valve configured to alter a flow of water through said condenser; and a water source heat pump controller configured to perform an automated condenser coil freeze protection procedure wherein, during the automated condenser coil freeze protection procedure, the water source heat pump controller is configured to: receive a first temperature reading of a water in the condenser;compare the first temperature reading to a first set point;if the first temperature reading is below the first set point, transmit a first control signal to the modulating motor-controlled valve, the first control signal configured to open the modulating motor-controlled valve to allow water circulation through the condenser;receive a second temperature reading of the water in the condenser;compare the second temperature reading to a second set point, the second set point lower than the first set point;if the second temperature reading is below the second set point: transmit a second control signal to the modulating motor-controlled valve, the second control signal configured to close the modulating motor-controlled valve to prevent water circulation through the condenser; andtransmit a third control signal to the compressor, the third control signal configured to cause the compressor to transfer heat from the compressor to the water in the condenser.
