The method further includes routing one or more network flows away from the first link if the first current bandwidth has degraded more than the second current bandwidth.

A method, comprising: receiving a control message from a first node in a network ring, the control message including a first current bandwidth of a first link in the network ring, the first current bandwidth indicating a signal degradation on the first link, wherein the control message is received by a second node in the network ring; detecting, by the second node, a second current bandwidth of a second link, the second link connecting the second node to another node in the network ring, wherein the second current bandwidth indicates a signal degradation on the second link; determining whether the second current bandwidth of the second link has degraded more than the first current bandwidth of the first link; starting a timer based on a determination that a port, on the second node and adjacent to the second link, is unblocked and that the second current bandwidth of the second link has degraded more than the first current bandwidth of the first link; and blocking the port on the second node based on the expiration of the timer, wherein the blocking is to cause one or more network flows to be routed away from the second link.
