A system and method for performing one-sided spot welding on parts to be welded. The system uses a spot welding device that transfers electric welding current through a consumable welding spike to a localized spot on th e parts to be welded. The welding spike is pressed against a surface of the parts to be welded by a weld electrode during the spot welding process The consumable welding spike is preferably melted and absorbed into the melt pool produced by the electric welding current.
