1. An apparatus, comprising:
a stack of layers defining one or more electronic switching devices, and a frontplane including liquid crystal or electrophoretic display media, wherein said stack of layers is exposed to oxygen and protected against migration of moisture from an external environment, said stack of layers is encapsulated in an encapsulating structure, and is exposed to one or more gas pockets between said stack of layers and said encapsulating structure, and said frontplane is on a side of the stack of layers opposite to the gas pockets.
