PURPOSE:To detect the presence or absence of the tape cassette by means of a detection means located apart from a moving locus in a tape player passing through the position corresponding to the information detection hole of the tape cassette where the position of a reel table is changed according to the size of the tape cassette to be used and with the moving locus of the reel table mounted. CONSTITUTION:A light emitting element 44 and a light receiving element 45 for detecting the information for a small tape cassette 2 are provided at the position where light 46 passes through an information detection hole 17 formed on a bottom wall 11 of a cassette case 3 of the small cassette loaded on a video tape player 1 and an information display hole 15 formed on a back wall 16 in the almost vertical direction and the light emitting element and the light receiving element are deviated from the moving locus of a reel table 39'.
