A coating system, especially for vehicle wheels and body parts, has a reflective layer (13) applied by vacuum sputtering onto a levelling layer (12) which has a smooth surface (12a) roughness of >= 0.5 mu , provided on a base surface (11). Preferably, the levelling layer (12) consists of a modified epoxy resin applied by powder coating, or consists of a lacquer, preferably a wet lacquer or metallisation lacquer. Also claimed is a coating method, involves applying the levelling layer (12) of >= 0.5 mu surface roughness onto the base surface (11), surface treating the levelling layer, especially by plasma treatment, and then applying the reflective layer (13) by vacuum sputtering.
