<p>A bio-compatible polymeric material for use in medical applications, for example in an orthopaedic implant, comprises a polymer, especially a polymer having phenyl moieties, carbonyl or sulphone moieties, and ether or thioether moieties in the polymer backbone. Bio-compatible moieties are associated with chain ends of the polymer to enhance the bio-compatibility of the polymer compared to the polymer alone. In preferred embodiments, a polymer having a polymer chain with functional groups at its ends may be made into a shape which represents or is a precursor of a device or part of a device for use in medical applications and then bio-compatible moieties may be caused to associate with chain ends of the polymer at or near a surface of the polymer.</p> |
