Use of rutin or isorhamnetin, or plant parts or extracts containing them, to treat depression and related conditions, optionally incorporated into foods

Use of rutin (I), isorhamnetin (II), derivatives of (II), or plant parts and/or extracts that contain (I) or (II) in free or bound form, or that can be metabolized to (II), for treating depressive disorders and diseases; other affective disorders; listlessness; melancholy; loss of motivation and low morale and for improving emotional well-being. An independent claim is also included for a pharmaceutical composition or food that contains (I), (II) or their derivatives etc. as specified. ACTIVITY : Antidepressant. In a forced swimming test, on rats, doses of 3 and 48 mg/kg of rutin caused, respectively, 8% and 74% inhibition of immobility relative to a control; compared to 46% inhibition for 30 mg/kg imipramine. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
