The method involves stopping ignition and/or fuel supply for all cylinders of a combustion engine for engine shutdown. A charge-cycle valve of each cylinder is fully carried over in a closed condition, during the engine shutdown process. A starting device for driving the engine is activated, in response to an engine start signal. The valve is in closed condition, until the starting device and/or a crankshaft reaches a preset start speed. Each cylinder is activated by switching-on the ignition and/or fuel supply as well as the operation of valve when the start speed is reached.
