<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress horizontal streaks and also the flicker of an image, in forming an image by scanning projection using a one-dimensional type optical modulation device. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes a light source, a one-dimensional type optical modulation device, and a projection optical system containing a scanning optical system. The scanning optical system is equipped with a main scanning optical system and a subscanning optical system that scans in a direction orthogonal to the optical axis and the scanning direction by the main scanning optical system. The subscanning by the subscanning optical system is performed between the frames of the main scanning by the main scanning optical system.
