1. An indicia carrying substrate carrying indicia, at least some of the indicia being configured to be illuminated when attached to a transparent substrate within which light is at least periodically injected and trapped by total internal reflection (TIR) between first and second opposing surfaces of the transparent substrate, the indicia carrying substrate comprising:
a refractive medium bounded, on opposing sides, by a first surface and a second surface of the indicia carrying substrate, wherein one or more first TIR-defeating features are located on the first surface of the indicia carrying substrate and one or more first indicia are located on the second surface of the indicia carrying substrate, the one or more TIR-defeating features being configured to optically couple the first surface of the indicia carrying substrate to the second surface of the transparent substrate, and release at least some of the trapped light, causing the released light to travel from the second surface of the transparent substrate through the refractive medium to illuminate the one or more first indicia, causing at least some of the released light to be scattered, which can then be detected from at least one point externally to both the indicia carrying substrate and the transparent substrate. |
