摘要 An image display device includes: a color gamut determining unit configured to determine a color gamut of pixels constituting an image; an image separating unit configured to separate the image into a low chroma image component and a high chroma image component based on a color gamut determination result; and a display unit configured to divide one frame period into subframe periods and temporally separate the low chroma image component and the high chroma image component in each subframe period to form an image. A backlight driving unit causes a broadband light source to emit light when the low chroma image component is being displayed and causes a narrowband light source to emit light when the high chroma image component is being displayed.

An image display device that displays an image, the image display device comprising: (a) a backlight device including a plurality of light sources; (b) a separator configured to divide an input image into a first image component and a second image component; (c) a modulator configured to modulate light from the backlight device based on (i) the first image component in a first period within a display period of the image and (ii) the second image component in a second period within a display period of the image; and (d) a controller configured to control the backlight device so as to emit first light in the first period and to emit second light in the second period, wherein each of the first light and the second light includes red light, green light, and blue light; and wherein a spectrum of the second light has wider band characteristics than a spectrum of the first light.
