Apparatus for the development of exposed rectangular photographic sheet material with conveyor means (20) to advance the sheet material through the apparatus and including a device for calculating the surface area of sheet material (21) processed in the apparatus. The sensor device comprises two sensor means S1 and S2 and a processor means. The first sensor means S1 measures the length (A-B) of the sheet, and the second sensor means S2 is arranged at a bias angle ( alpha ) to the direction of advance of the sheet material and is operated by the front and rear edges (AD, BC) of the sheet.
