A brake shoe in which a friction lining 16 is secured to a platform 12 of a shoe body 11 solely by a thermosetting adhesive resin 20 cured at elevated temperature is manufactured by using a friction material including fibrous reinforcement materials and an uncured thermosetting hinder, roll formed to define a green lining element which is sandwiched with the adhesive between the platform and a bearing surface that applies small constraining pressure (e.g. 0.1 - 0.34 MPa) by way of the major faces 17, 18 but not minor faces 19. The resins of the adhesive and lining element are cured together in situ on, and into intimate conformity with, the platform. The constraining pressure applied defines the density of the cured lining. The constraining pressure is sufficient to give a finished product in which the lining is in intimate conformity with the surface of the platform 12. <IMAGE> |
