The method involves switching a power semiconductor (14) in clocked manner. Switching speed of a power converter is controlled depending on duration of current-carrying conduction phases of the power semiconductor and/or a free-wheeling diode (15). The switching speed of the power converter is increased or degraded in an operating condition with the long or short current-carrying conduction phases of the power semiconductor and the short or long current-carrying conduction phases of the free-wheeling diode, respectively. An independent claim is also included for an electrical control unit for controlling a power converter.
