<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small capacitor and an electronic device using barium titanate which has a small particle size, hardly contains unnecessary impurities and improves electrical characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: Te barium titanate contains <5 mol% (including 0 mol%) at least one element chosen from the group consisting of Sn, Zr, Ca, Sr, Pb, La, Ce, Mg, Bi, Ni, Al, Si, Zn, B, Nb, W, Mn, Fe, Cu and Dy against BaTiO<SB>3</SB>. In the barium titanate, the BET specific surface area x (unit: m<SP>2</SP>/g) and the ratio y of the length (unit: nm) of c axis to the length (unit: nm) of an axis in crystal lattice, calculated by Rietveld method, satisfy general inequality: y=c axis length/a axis length, y≥1.011-8.8×10<SP>-6</SP>×x<SP>3</SP>(wherein 4.1<x≤9.7).
