A sports boot has its upper (2) extended upwards to form a rigid collar (3) which fit round the ankle. The collar has overlapping ends (4,5) and a fastening strap (6) or similar which joins them together. The boot incorporates a component which fixes the overlapping ends of the collar relative to one another in the vertical plane, made e.g. in the form of a rigid loop (9) with the same cross-section as the strap (6). The loop is fixed to the outer overlapping end of the collar so that it fits between the two ends of the strap joined to the ends of the collar. In variants of the design the vertical fixing for the collar's overlapping ends can be in the form of a rigid lug on the inner end of the collar engaging with a lengthwise slot in the outer end, or a tongue and socket.
