PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing aβ-ketoester by which theβ- ketoester useful as a synthetic intermediate for a medicine and an agrochemical can be safely produced in high yield while reducing the generation of byproducts by reacting specific methyl ketones with a specified dialkyl carbonate. SOLUTION: (A) Methyl ketones of formula I (R1 is an alkyl; R2 is H or an alkyl; or R1 and R2 may form a ring by connecting to each other) is reacted with (B) a dialkyl carbonate of formula II (R3 is an alkyl) in the presence of a base in a reaction solvent selected from a hydrocarbon and a halogenated hydrocarbon while distilling off an alcohol to provide (C) aβ-ketoester of formula II and/or a salt thereof. The obtainedβ-ketoester and/or the salt thereof is neutralized to provide the objectiveβ-ketoester. For example, when methyl i-propyl ketone is used as the component A, and dimethyl carbonate is used as the component B, methyl 4-methyl-3-oxopentanoate can be obtained.
