PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an absolute position, ensuring a high resolution and high detection precision. SOLUTION: The position detection device enables high-precision detection of a relative position and the absolute position of a movable object to be detected 1 with simple structure, by causing the movable object 1 to have a pair of narrow-range position detection sections 1a, 1b which differ at least in either material or shape from each other, and a wide-range position detection section 1c whose intensity of magnetization is increased or decreased, obtaining a relative position of the movable object 1 from this pair of narrow-range sections 1a, 1b by detection signals of short wavelengths by the use of sets of coils Ca, Cb, and obtaining a coarse absolute position of the movable object 1 from the wide-range section 1c by an absolute position detection means 4. Consequently, the absolute position can be detected ensuring the high resolution and detection precision, and the reliability and utility of the position detection device are sharply improved.
