An apparatus and a method for changing a background image in a mobile communication terminal are provided to change a background image according to the operation state of the mobile terminal without opening/closing a folder or sliding up/down. An image stored in a memory is set as a background image according to background image information and displayed. The operation according to the request of a user is performed(206). An image next to the image set as the present background image is selected in the preset sequence(210). It is determined if the operational state of the mobile terminal returns to an idle state as the operation according to the request of a user is terminated or canceled. The selected image is loaded by the return to the idle state. The loaded image is set as a background image.
