The temp. sensing units (7,8) are arranged in staggered formation so that they are applied successively with progressive wear. A change-over switch is provided, across which a temp. sensing unit is controllable. An evaluation unit converts the temp. signal to an indicator signal and upon failure of one of the temp. sensing units, controls the next temp. sensing unit controlled via the change-over switch. Temp. dependent resistances are used as temp. sensing units. Thermocouple elements can be used as temp. sensing units and an electronic change-over switch is used. ADVANTAGE - More reliable since fixed sensor not exposed to risk of dirt accumlation.
