The quick change adaptor is used in conjunction with taps having next to the square driving section (6) a shoulder (76) which abuts against an internal shoulder (8) of the adaptor, and a circumferential groove (9) which engages with a locking ring (31) on the end of the adaptor. The locking ring is rotatable on the adaptor body about an axis (17) which is offset from the axis (19) of the tool shank bore (4) of hte adaptor. A hole (18) in the locking ring of diameter equal to or greater than the tool shank bore has its axis eccentric to the axis of rotation (17) of the locking ring. The eccentricities are chosen such that the edge (20) of the locking ring hole comes fully into engagement with the groove (9) and fully clear when the locking ring is rotated through 180 deg.
