Sulphonylalkanoylamino hydroxyamino sulphamic acid compounds represented by formula (1), or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, prodrug or ester thereof, wherein R, R1, R20, R21, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, x, t, and Y are as defined in the description, are effective as retroviral protease inhibitors, and in particular as inhibitors of HIV protease.
