A photosensitive member for electrophotography has a photosensitive layer provided on a photoconductive substrate. The photosensitive layer contains at least one of indole derivatives represented by a chemical formula (I): <IMAGE> (I) wherein R1 and R2 are members selected from a group consisting of hydrogen atom and alkyl, aralkyl, allyl and alkoxy groups having 1-9 carbon atoms (but R1 and R2 do not stand for hydrogen atoms at the same time); R3 is a member selected from a group consisting of hydrogen and halogen atoms and alkyl and alkoxy groups having 1-3 carbon atoms; X is a member selected from a group consisting of alkylen, allylen, carbonyl, sulfonyl, sulfinyl and sulfide groups and oxygen atom; and n stands for an integer of 0 or 1.
