PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly unlock a lock mechanism by utilizing the vibration of a vane caused by a rotatingly variable torque at the beginning of the unlocking. SOLUTION: A timing pulley 1 and a vane rotatable relative to the timing pulley 1 are normally and reversely rotated by the supply and discharge of a relative hydraulic pressure to and from a spark-advance angle side hydraulic chamber 32 and a spark-retard angle side hydraulic chamber 33 to convert the relative rotation phase between the timing pulley and a camshaft 2 so as to make variable the opening/closing timings of an intake valve. The spring force of the coiled spring 39 of a lock mechanism restricting the relative rotation of the vane to the timing pulley is set to a pressure for moving a lock pin 34 backward when the hydraulic pressure higher than the averaged value of positive and negative alternating variable torques acting on the vane and lower than the maximum variable torque acts on a pressure receiving chamber 40.
