The invention relates to a method of enforcing an upper limit on the number of rendering devices in a network, the network comprising a number of leaf devices that are rendering devices and that are connected directly or indirectly to a root device. The method comprises the steps of: the leaf nodes sending out respective device counting requests which are forwarded by one or more intermediate devices to the root device, the intermediate nodes that are rendering devices further sending out respective device counting requests which are forwarded by zero or more intermediate devices to the root device, the root device deriving the total number of rendering devices from the forwarded respective device counting requests and restricting content distribution over the network if the derived total number of rendering devices exceeds a predetermined maximum.
