PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accommodate piloted cellular operation and pilotless cordless operation using a multi-mode handset. SOLUTION: A common pool of channels serves cellular and cordless operations. The handset monitors forward portions of all cordless subset channels when the handset is within the coverage area 16 of its cordless base station. Unused channels are indicated on a dormant channel list, which is passed to the handset's cordless base station when the handset registers for cordless operation. The cordless base station makes an active channel list based upon the dormant channel list.
