The invention relates to a method and a device for the thermal reduction of sulfur dioxide present in a gas to be treated and particularly in industrial gaseous effluents, wherein an oxygen-rich oxidant and a fuel gas are injected into a reaction zone (201) in order to generate an oxy-fuel flame (202) in the reaction zone (201), and wherein the gas to be treated (5) is injected around the oxy-fuel flame (202), a reducing gas (7) being injected in the gas to be treated (5) in or upstream of the reaction zone (201).
