PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable faster detection of soot sensor malfunction.SOLUTION: A method of monitoring functional capability of a soot sensor, which is responsive to deposition of soot from an exhaust gas stream on a sensor surface, includes acquiring a measurement signal 61 of the soot sensor, and running a plausibility check for determining whether the measurement signal matches an expected result 66. According to the invention, presence/non-presence of conditions for liquid, such as water, from the exhaust gas stream to condensate on the sensor surface is determined. Additionally or alternatively, such conditions are produced. The plausibility check then includes determining (60) whether the measurement signal reflects condensation of liquid. The determination of the presence of conditions for condensation includes a step of measuring or estimating temperature of the sensor surface.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3 |
