Pentaerythritol derivatives of formula (I) and their salts are new. R1, R2, R3 = CH2-ONO2, CH2-OR4 or R5, where at least one of the substituents is R5; R4 = H or 1-6C alkanoyl; R5 = COR6; R6 = OH, OR7, NH2, NHR7, N(R7)2, N<+>(R7)3X<->, NR8, NR9R10, NR11R12, or NH-NH2; R7 = 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, heteroaryl or heteroaralkyl; R8 = 1-6C alkylidene; R9, R10 = different R7 groups; R11, R12 = N(R7)2, N<+>(R7)3X<-> or NR8; X = halo or other anionic group. Also claimed are compounds of formula (XIV), (XVI), (XIX) and (XXII). For (XIV): R13 = -O-CH2-C(CH2OH)q(CH2ONO2)r; m + n + o + p = 4; q + r = 3; m and/or r /- 1; and o and/or p /- 1; For (XVI): R14 - R16 = H, OR19, ONO2, OR17 or R18; R17 = COR19 or R23; R18 = O(PO2H)OR20, O(PO2H)OR22, OSO2OR22 or COOR19; R19 = H or 1-6C alkyl; R20 = (1-6C alkyl)-R21; R21 = N(R19)2, N<+>(R19)3 or N<+>(R19)3X<->; R22 = R19, aryl or N(R19)2; R23 = the 3- or 5-carbonyl group of a 1,4-dihydropyridin-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (optionally substituted in the 2, 4 and/or 6-position), a 1-substituted pyrrolidine-2-carbonyl group, the N-carbonyl group of a substituted sydnone imine, -CO-CH(NHCOR19)-C(R19)2-S-NO, -CO-CH(NH2)-C(R19)2-S-NO or -NH-CH(COOR19)-C(R19)2-S-NO; X = halo or another anion; but excluding the cases where R14 = R15 = R16 = ONO2 or OH; R14 = OH and R15 = R16 = ONO2; and R14 = R15 = OH and R16 = ONO2.
