The device has a first holder (16) for the pearls (35) which are threaded onto a thread (36) for knotting. The holder has a slit open on one side for inserting the thread sideways. A loop former (11) has a first finger (12) spaced from the first holder and an entrainment member (13) which swivels about an axis (9) that is closer to the finger than to the entrainment member. The swivel angle is such that a first entrained section (36b) of the thread passes a second section (36a) running between holder and finger. A loop holder (19) is formed by a second finger, movable between a first inoperative position and a second operative position where it engages in the space between the second and first sections of the thread to hold open the loop formed by swivelling the entrainment member. The free end of the thread can be passed through a passage (42) in the swivel area of the entrainment member. A second holder and second slit is staggered from the first holder so that the second finger (19) seen from the pearl to be knotted, can be moved from a position behind the first holder into a position in front of the second holder.
