Printer which makes it possible to carry out both registration (recording) using an ink tape covered with a hot-melt ink and registration using an ink tape covered with a hot-sublimation ink. In the thermal-transfer printer, a thermal head mounted on a carriage is moved in order thereby to carry out printing on printing paper, the carriage moving at the same time, the thermal head remaining in pressure contact with a roller by means of an ink tape and printing paper, where the thermal- transfer printer includes, in addition, a control section which makes it possible to switch selectively, in accordance with a mode signal, between a first registration mode, in which printing is carried out by hot-fusion transfer on printing paper, using an ink tape of the hot-melt type as the ink tape, and a second registration mode, in which printing by hot-sublimation transfer is carried out on printing paper using an ink tape of the hot-sublimation type as the ink tape. <IMAGE>
