PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having at least two polar groups and useful for photoresist materials capable of giving high resolution and high adhesion to substrates. SOLUTION: This new compound is a terpene-based compound of formula I (X1 to X3 are such that one of them is OH, the other being each H), e.g. 3-oxo-8-terpineol. The compound of formula I is obtained by subjecting a system comprising a dihydroxy compound of formula II (e.g. p-menthane-3,8-diol), a solvent (e.g. n-butane) and an oxidizing agent (e.g. sodium hypochlorite) to reaction pref. at -30 to 200 deg.C and, after ending the reaction, carrying out a separatory operation such as distillation; wherein the molar ratio of the oxidizing agent to the compound of formula II is pref. 0.1-20. |
