<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance alkane oxidative dehydrogenation catalyst using a V-Mg compound and to provide a method for highly efficiently producing an alkene by alkane oxidative dehydrogenation using the catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: An alkene is produced by oxidatively dehydrogenating an alkane by using a catalyst containing at least a palladium compound and magnesium orthovanadate (Mg<SB>3</SB>V<SB>2</SB>O<SB>8</SB>).
