Provided is a liquid crystal aligning agent especially for in-plane switching elements which have excellent liquid crystal alignment stability and short afterimage erasure time, and which is less susceptible to chipping due to rubbing, while undergoing a small change of flicker from immediately after the start of driving. This liquid crystal aligning agent contains: a specific polymer (A) that is at least one substance selected from the group consisting of polyimide precursors that are obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid component with a diamine component that contains a diamine represented by formula (1) and polyimides that are obtained by imidizing the polyimide precursors; and a specific polymer (B) that is a polyamide acid obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid component with a diamine component (excluding a diamine represented by formula (1)). (In formula (1), each of R1 and R2 independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms or a group represented by formula (2), and at least one of R1 and R2 is a group represented by formula (2). In formula (2), A represents a single bond or a divalent group that is a hydrocarbon group having 1-4 carbon atoms.) |
