The subject-matter of the invention is an ink-ribbon cartridge for typewriters or similar machines which are equipped with a device for detecting the presence of an ink-ribbon cartridge and for detecting the type of ink ribbon inserted. For this purpose, a permanent magnet is arranged in the ink-ribbon cartridge, whose magnetic field influences a magnetic sensor. In this case, the field intensity of the permanent magnet is predetermined in accordance with the type of ink ribbon inserted. A correspondingly designed sensor can thus detect the insertion of a cartridge per se and a particular field intensity. Via a microprocessor in the typewriter, the transporting step associated with the ink ribbon can thus be set in an optimum manner without the operator having to take any action in this regard.
