A method for recording digital data according to a recording type for a recording medium. This method discriminates the kind of the recording medium loaded, and selects a data format in which auxiliary data is buried in the data which is recorded readably as an optical change in the loaded recording medium, on the basis of the discrimination result. It is, then, decided whether or not the recording region to perform recording in is one for burying the auxiliary data in, If this decision reveals that the recording region is that to bury the auxiliary data, the auxiliary data are so recorded in a predetermined recording region on the basis of the selected data format that it is buried in the data recorded in the predetermined recording region.
