An apparatus and a method for reducing peak to average power ratio in a wireless communication system are provided to reduce a PAPR under the same conditions such as hardware complexity and processing delay. A symbol generator(102) produces a symbol transmitted to each of a plurality of transmission antennas. A PAPR(Peak to Average Power Ratio) operator(104) computes a PAPR value about each symbol. A detector(106) detects the maximum PAPR value among the PAPR values of respective symbols. If the detected PAPR value exceeds a standards PAPR value, a controller(108) outputs a control signal in order to reduce a PAPR value of a corresponding symbol. The PAPR attenuator(110) reduces the PAPR value of the corresponding symbol by inputting the control signal.
