This invention relates to a charge controller and method of charging suitable for charging storage batteries of a wind based energy system. The method includes the steps of rectifying the output of the generator and applying it to the end terminals of the series connected bank of batteries, and rectifying and supplying the output voltage of the generator between a centre tap of the series connected bank of batteries and alternate end terminals of the series connected bank of batteries. A controller for this application is also supplied.
