PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for controlling the rotation of optically trapped microscopic particles by controlling an in-plane elliptical distribution of an refractive index. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal optical device includes a circular-pattern electrode divided into a plurality of parts through slits. The device uses a laser beam to optically trap optically/geometrically anisotropic microscopic particles by employing a method for rotating the elliptical distribution of a refractive index in the in-plane direction. The device also changes the elliptical distribution of the refractive index to the circular distribution thereof, thereby performs not only the three-dimensional position control of the microscopic particles and the rotation control of the microscopic particles within the substrate surface but also the rotation control of the microscopic particles in a polar-angle direction perpendicular to the substrate surface.
