STORING AND RETRIEVING LARGE IMAGES VIA DICOM

Systems, methods, and media for storing a digital image using the Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) standard. In an embodiment, a digital image at a first resolution is divided into a plurality of regions. Each of the plurality of regions is stored as a separate DICOM image file. In addition, each of the DICOM image files is associated with a DICOM series representing the digital image at the first resolution.

1. A system for storing a digital image using the Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) standard, the system comprising:
an image capture module configured to operate an image capture device and acquire digital slide image data representative of a physical slide specimen; a DICOM module configured to divide the digital slide image data at a first resolution into a first plurality of regions and create a plurality of first DICOM images from each of said first plurality of regions, the DICOM module further configured to divide the digital slide image data at a second resolution into a second plurality of regions and create a plurality of second DICOM images from each of said second plurality of regions, and the DICOM module further configured to associate the plurality of first DICOM images and the plurality of second DICOM images with a DICOM study representing the digital image at a plurality of resolutions and store the DICOM study in a non-transitory computer readable medium.
