PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a latex which exhibits a high stability over a long period, and provides a coating composition which yields a high-quality film with a chipping resistance, an appropriate film thickness and effective damping, sound insulation and adhesion abilities. SOLUTION: A copolymer latex for aqueous coating is obtained by allowing (a) 5 to 60 wt.% aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, (b) 0.1 to 10 wt.% ethylene unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and (c) 30 to 94.9 wt.% of a monomer other than the above monomers (the total amount of monomers (a), (b) and (c) is 100 wt.%) to undergo copolymerization in the presence of anα- methylstyrene dimer. Here, the copolymer has a loss factor (thanδ) possessing at least one peak at a temperature range of 0 to 60 deg.C, and a toluene-insoluble content of 10 to 90 wt.%.
