PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image display device which dispenses with a picture memory at the outside and whose cost is low and whose power consumption is low. SOLUTION: This device includes a precharge circuit 9 precharging signal electrodes X1 to Xn, a sense-amplifier circuit 5 amplifying voltages based on electric charges being held in pixel electrodes 4, a data selecting circuit 6 selecting inversion outputs of the sense-amplifier circuit 5 and an exetanl input signal and a timing generating circuit 7 controlling the sense-amplifier circuit 5 and the data selecting circuit 6. Then, voltages based on electric charges stored in the pixel electrodes 4 are amplified and inverted and capacitances which are to be constituted of the pixel electrodes 4 and counter electrodes 18 are charged by the control by the timing generating circuit 7. The data selecting circuit 6 fetches external data only with respect to columns in which data writing are needed and the pixel electrodes 4 are charged through the signal electrodes X1 to Xn.
