The invention provides methods to detect Legionella with fluorescent resonance energy transfer and further to detect pneumophila in biological samples using real-time PCR. Primers and probes for the detection of Legionella and L.pneumophila are provided by the invention. Articles of manufacture containing such primers and probes for detecting Legionella and L.pneumophila are further provided by the invention.
