<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-retaining composition that hardly suffers from gelling even under an acidic condition thereby to retain swelling performances in the stomach, and to provide a new type of appetite-suppressing agent that is less toxic and causes little side effects using the composition. <P>SOLUTION: The water-retaining composition comprises glucuronoxylomannan comprised of α-1,3-mannnose constituting the main chain and D-xylose and D-glucuronic acid as side chains, where the constitutional molar ratio of the α-1,3-mannnose to the D-glucuronic acid [α-1,3-mannnose:D-glucuronic acid] in the glucuronoxylomannan is 9:1 to 9:3.5.
